England & Ireland, 2017. Revisited. Part 2: Oxford
Part two of our 2017 trip through England and Ireland, re-edited nine years later. This one belonged to my wife.
Oxford
Oxford was the part of the trip that belonged to my wife. She studied abroad at Magdalen, so that's where we started. We walked the chapel, the cloister and the lawns around the New Building under heavy clouds, then followed Addison's Walk along the river, past the plaque marking C.S. Lewis's poem. Down at Magdalen Bridge the punts were going out. I watched from the bank.
That evening we stopped into the Eagle and Child, where Lewis, Tolkien and the Inklings used to meet.
The next two days were the city itself: the Covered Market, the Radcliffe Camera with bikes leaned along its railings, St Mary's, the Bodleian, the Bridge of Sighs, and the quiet lanes off Holywell Street. On the last day we toured Christ Church, its cathedral and Great Hall, spent an hour in the Ashmolean, and finished with a look inside the Randolph.
